We were very excited to have been shortlisted in three categories for the prestigious Cornwall Business Awards this year. We were up for Best Innovation of the Year, Best Website, and Lucy herself was shortlisted for Entrepreneur of the Year, so off we trotted to the 2008 ceremony, hopeful that we might actually win one of them!

In an exciting twist of events, we actually won two of the three - yippee!! We proudly watched as Lucy wandered up to collect her Entrepreneur of the Year Award and cheered happily as we were presented with Best Innovation. But the best was yet to come as the Winner of Winners (the equivalent to the Crufts 'Best in Show') was announced and took us all by surprise - Frugi!!  

Lucy has spent the last 3 years playing a game of “hunt the eco-friendly packaging”. You see, here at Frugi, we needed to use something to protect our clothes from damp, dust, and dirt. Until recently we used plastic bags and Lucy was vexed by this…Her long search has taken her through all sorts of options.

Corn starch based bio-degradable bags seemed an obvious choice, but they were made from genetically modified crops. Not good. It looked as if her hunt for a green alternative to plastic bags would end up as a bit of a wild goose chase, but then she stumbled across some potatoes…

It turns out that there is a company out there pioneering plastics made from renewable vegetable sources - Potato Starch. The resulting plastics are 100% biodegradable, recyclable and re-usable and extremely versatile. Guess what type of bags we’re using to protect our clothes now?

We were at Premier Kids in January and we had quite a few chats about our new potato packaging. It seems to be going down very well, like a bag of chips.
