The Origins of 1% For The Planet

Not long ago, a mountain climber and a fisherman realized they had a lot more in common than a disdain for wearing a suit to work.

Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, owner of Blue Ribbon Flies, were also passionate environmentalists that happened to be running successful businesses. More important, they understood it was good business to protect the natural resources that kept them in business. And the rest is history...
Here, at Frugi, we were inspired by Yvon Chouinard’s book, “Let my people go surfing”. It was great to read that there was a large company, namely Patagonia, running their business in the way that we run ours. It sort of proved that it could be done on a large scale and successfully. It also gave us a framework of how we could, not only treat our suppliers, customers and employees in the best way but also to give something back to help create a sustainable planet. We immediately got on the email and joined.

Frugi - A Proud member of 1% For The Planet

By being members of 1% for the Planet we are committed to donate 1% of our turnover (that's turnover, not profit) to audited grass-roots environmental concerns.

At present this money goes to the Pesticide Action Network (PAN UK)  and the Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

Organic Cotton Spray

PAN UK are working with Dr Robert Mensah on a programme of research and education, helping farmers to learn new techniques to increase the number of predatory insects in organic cotton crops and lower the number of pests. Specifically the research is

looking at the use of food sprays made from yeast and shea nut oils to encourage predatory insects. The results are very encouraging showing significantly increased crop yields and profitability by conserving the natural enemies of the pests, such as ants, spiders and bees.

 Cornwall Wildlife Trust

Marine Strandings

The Cornwall Wildlife Trust run a new initiative which aims to develop a scientifically acceptable method of identifying bycatch evidence on the beach without need for a post mortem examination.

The Cetacaen Bycatch Evidence Evaluation Project (BEEP) is really as important as DEFRA don't fund as many post mortems as they used to. Therefore it is very hard to determine cause of death for these beautiful

creatures which is something we need to establish in order to prevent it happening.

Ruth Williams of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust tells us that our donation has helped buy a freezer to store dolphins in whilst awaiting post mortem  - this means that more cetacaens reach post mortem stage. Also it has enabled essential equipment to be provided for the volunteers.
