Why Organic Cotton?

Organic Cotton Bol

What on earth is organic cotton?!
Aha, this is a question we hear quite often, but we're hoping that it'll soon be as understood as organic vegetables.

Cotton is grown in fields all across the world, and most farmers use pesticides and chemicals to get rid of naughty bugs that ruin the crop. Organic cotton, however, is grown without using these nasty pesticides and chemicals which is much better for everyone and everything involved.

Organic farming is loads better for the farmers and their families
It's pretty obvious to most people that organic farming is a better choice for the environment, but we think it's so important that people understand the social impact of it as well: At least 20,000 people in developing countries die every year from pesticide poisoning and 3 million suffer acute or reproductive after effects.*

It's not just farmers who are too poor or ill-educated to wear protective clothing who suffer pesticide poisoning. When the fields are sprayed other food and crops planted in border areas also get sprayed as it's impossible to spray one without the other. This is the food that village communities use to feed their families, and so the pesticides affect the farmers' wives and children too. There are so many heart-breaking stories about the damage caused, and if people knew more about it they would quickly be persuaded to shop for organic clothes rather than popping down to the local supermarket for a cheap t-shirt!

Organic Cotton farmers and their kids

Cow Dung is used in organic cotton farming

How do organic cotton farmers control pests?
Organic cotton farmers use a range of clever farming techniques. Cow dung and urine is surprisingly important in this process...! And, in the fields where Frugi's organic cotton is grown they intercrop the cotton with maize and beans which provide a home for good, friendly bugs. Things like yeast, neem and sour buttermilk are used to scare the bad bugs away, giving the cotton a better chance to grow.

Why organic cotton clothes are good for you too
It's not just farmers and the environment that feel the benefits of organic cotton.
  • Organic cotton feels softer, because the cotton fibres are left intact and not broken down by chemicals
  • Organic cotton smells cleaner because it is not finished with formaldehyde.
  • Organic cotton is less likely to trigger allergies (and that means that organic cotton baby clothes are really kind to eczema.)
