Our Autumn/Winter ’18 collection embraces the cosy, snuggly and generally scrumptious elements of hygge, inspired by the Danish principles of finding joy in the simple pleasures of everyday life.
Pronounced hoo-gah, the idea is to make the most of the little things, and the best part is that it’s so easy to do. Pop on your warmest socks, find a cosy corner of your house and have a read of our list…
Turning your home into a Hygge Headquarters
1. Candles are essential
According to The Little Book of Hygge: The Danish way to live well by Meik Wiking, “No recipe for Hygge is complete without candles”, so if you’re lighting your favourite scented number, that recent armful of tealights you bought on your last trip to Ikea, or opting for safety with some battery-powered lighting, you’re on the right track.
Just make sure you place any candles in a safe spot in the house, and never leave unattended!
2. Wrap up warm
Squishy cushions, cosy throws and woolly blankets will help you to get that hygge feeling. You could snuggle up on the sofa with your little ones to read a book together, or hold a family film night in your comfiest organic cotton PJs!
4. Get crafty
From crocheting and knitting something for a loved one, to decorating your bookshelves with paper stars, hearts or snowflakes, there are loads of crafts you could try. Have a browse on Pinterest to find something that’s up your street and remember, hygge is best enjoyed with friends, so invite your nearest and dearest over and encourage them to pop their phones to one side for the night 🙂
3. Go outside!
It’s going to start getting chillier and rainier as we head into autumn, but there’s something really comforting about wearing layers, donning waterproofs and getting out in the elements! One of our favourite outdoor activities is scouring the hedgerows for blackberries or popping to a pick-your-own place to get seasonal fruit for a scrummy crumble. What better reward is there for a blustery stomp outside than returning to your cosy home for the ultimate comfort food?
Blackberry and Apple Crumble
- 400g apples, peeled and chopped into chunks
- 150g blackberries
- 1 – 2 tbsp light-brown soft sugar
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1tsp vanilla extract
For the topping:
- 250g plain flour
- 175g brown sugar
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- 150g chilled and cubed butter
- 4tbsp oats
- 2 tbsp chopped hazelnuts (optional)
Place the apples and blackberries in a pan with the sugar, cinnamon and vanilla. Mix well and cook for 5 minutes on a medium heat. Spoon into an ovenproof dish.
Rub the butter and flour together with your hands until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir through the sugar, oats, cinnamon and hazelnuts if using. Sprinkle the crumble mixture over the fruit.
Pop in the oven at 180C for 40 – 45 minutes until golden and bubbling, and serve warm with a generous dollop of Cornish clotted cream! Yummy!
