Yoga, kids and self-care - we chat to mum and yoga teacher, Hannah Barrett

Hannah is a London-based yoga teacher with a passion for helping people transform their lives through yoga...

Hi Hannah, please tell us a little bit about yourself and your family…

Hi!! I am 35 and I live in London with my husband, two kiddies and a Cocker Spaniel called Bernie!

When did you first start practicing yoga?

I first started properly going to yoga classes to help reduce my stress levels before my husband and I started trying for our first baby. At the time I had a demanding job in finance that I loved, but the intensity and long hours were taking their toll and it was clear that stress was getting in the way of what I wanted in many aspects of my life.

I had dabbled with the odd yoga class for years with the hope of gaining flexibility (I couldn't even touch my toes at the start). But what I began to learn once I really committed to it, and what drew me in further and further until I became a teacher myself, was that yoga has so much more to offer beyond just the physical.  I was stronger than I had ever been in both mind and body.

What type of yoga do you enjoy?

My go-to yoga style is a strong and dynamic vinyasa flow. Vinyasas flow basically links a variety of poses together with a strong focus on the breath. I love creative flows that piece together postures in an interesting way! Saying that, if I am tired and have had a long day, it feels amazing to have a slower, more restorative flow after the kids are in bed.

I think one of the things I love about yoga is that your practice can look like whatever you need it to.  It can even look like a five-minute seated flow from your bed in the morning.

What are the benefits for you?

Strength, stress relief and feeling present and connected to life! These are the reasons I am drawn back to the mat day after day.

How do you find time for yourself whilst being a busy mum?

It’s very easy not to, to be very honest! BUT you have to make it a priority. Self-care isn’t selfish, it’s necessary. Let me say that again… it’s necessary!

I try and get on my mat six days a week even if it’s just for ten minutes! I usually end up flowing at 7pm after the kids are in bed and I try and have at least one 60-minute practice a week. My go-to practice is strength based but I’ll switch it up so if one day I have focused on legs, the next day I may have a slower, more grounding practice. If I know I’m going to have a hectic day, I’ll get up 15 minutes early, do a 10 minute meditation followed by 5 minutes of mindful movement and I don’t even need to leave the bed to do it!

Does Amelie enjoy yoga?

Yes and no! She loves joining me on the mat but hates me telling her what to do! So usually she will either teach me or be happy playing beside me as I flow, joining in when she feels like it.

I want to make time on the mat as lovely and carefree as it can be, so I don’t push her. My son did a lot of the Cosmic Kids yoga with me in lockdown, which was so sweet!

What benefits do you see in Amelie when practising yoga?

She is SO sweet when she figures out how to do something. She managed dancer pose for the first time without my help and thinking about the smile on her face makes me smile now. So sweet.

Over time her balance has become better and she’s able to concentrate and do it with me for longer.  I can’t wait until she’s a little older and she’ll let me teach her properly.

For anyone thinking of getting into yoga, how should they start?

Find a beginner class and learn the basics. Once you have the fundamentals try out a variety of styles and teachers and figure out which works best for you. Don’t be put off if you don’t like a certain style or teacher, there are so many out there. And once you find the one that resonates with you, you’ll be hooked!
