Meet Molly, founder of @create_make_and_play
Hi Molly, please can you tell us a little about yourself, your family and lifestyle?
I’m 32 and a Mum to Luca, who is 4 years old and Arlo, who is 2 years old. Before I became a mum, I was a Primary Teacher for over five years, specialising in Early Years. We are an active family and the boys love to be outdoors.
What made you begin Create Make Play?
Since becoming a stay-at-home mum I have utilised my extensive knowledge and experience to create and make age appropriate play activities for my children to enjoy, flourish and learn from and thought @create_make_and_play would be a great way to document what we do. I also thought that sharing some of my knowledge and activities would be a great way to help other parents, carers, grandparents and educators. Which will inevitably mean I am helping other children to learn and grow through play.
You will see that I highlight the areas of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum that compliment each activity. I hope to provide other caregivers and educators with an insight into the possible learning opportunities and outcomes in the activities I have created.
Why is learning through play so important for little ones?
I am an advocate for learning through play, giving children the freedom to learn at their own pace and giving them ownership over their play. It’s a brilliant wait to nurture their imaginations and curiosity. Through this they will be able to develop life skills such as self confidence, problem solving, sharing, independence as well as working with others.
We love that you re-purpose old packaging in your crafts, is being sustainable/eco-friendly something you're passionate about and actively try to do?
I absolutely love to make recycled puzzles and games for my children but also love to re-purpose old packaging to create crafts with the boys. Getting children involved in recycling and gardening etc is a great way to teach children from a young age how to be eco-friendly. I also love to show other families that you don’t need lots of money to buy wooden toys and games for your children, lots of educational toys can be made from cardboard.
What have been your little ones favourite crafting activities? Do they prefer different styles of learning?
Both of my children are kinaesthetic learners (hands on learning approach), they really do learn by doing. They both love painting and water play most!
