Get Ready For Back To School!

With a new term fast approaching we're getting ready for heading back to school

We caught up with Anna Corry to chat about how she gets herself and her little girls prepared for a new school term and how they've been spending their summer holidays so far!

"Hello! I’m Anna, a busy mum to three little girls, Bella, 8, Annie, 6 and Martha, 22 months, and wife to Colin. I run my own social media consultancy, AC Connects, and have a lifestyle blog & Instagram page called Blossoming Birds, which I started in response to becoming a mama for the second time in 2015. Life is super-busy but I really count myself lucky to be able to juggle work and clients around family life, particularly during the COVID pandemic.

My biggest aim this summer has been to make the most of the simple things with the girls. I've tried to not be a slave to routine, and to enjoy all the little things that make holidays special like late night beach trips or movie nights past bedtime. Our Frugi water bottles have made an appearance quite a few times throughout the sunny months! Making memories is very important to us as a family and we’ve really made the most of it."

Parents everywhere are getting ready to prep the kids for going back to school/nursery – do you have any traditions or rituals each year that you do as a family?

The one thing we consistently do, of course, is the back-to-school picture at the front door! Like every parent, I suppose, I love comparing them year-on-year – they grow far too quickly for my liking! Another family favourite is the ritual of choosing the accessories for the coming year. I always involve the girls in choosing their own lunchboxes and pencil cases; I remember my own excitement at their age being able to choose my own shiny, new lunch bag! They picked their own Frugi lunch bags this year and adore the brightly coloured prints. Who wouldn’t?!

How do your little ones usually find going back to school/nursery after a break?

I am lucky in that I have two very sociable girls who love their friends and all the buzz of school so they’re delighted to go back in in September. Martha, my littlest one, hasn’t been used to meeting a lot of new people yet due to lockdown. Although I’m pretty sure she’ll follow in her sisters’ footsteps when the time comes; she’s not shy! Bella and Annie love their school, their amazing teachers and all their buddies, and they like the familiar routine. Maybe not so keen on the homework, but I can’t blame them for that!

What are your “Back to School Hacks” to go back to your school routine after the holidays?

I get prepared the night before—the mornings are hectic enough with three kids—so I make their lunches and set out all the clothes and bags etc. I would love to say we start trying to get into a routine again before school starts…but I can’t! I always have great intentions about being sensible but I believe it’s more important to make the most of each day and grab each opportunity. I‘m normally still ironing name tags the night before.

What are your must haves for the new school year?

A great raincoat! Here in Northern Ireland it’s notoriously wet, so I know it will be an item that’s used most months (probably most days if I’m honest!). We always choose one that’s nice and warm too, so it can double up as a proper outdoor coat.  The girls have got the latest Frugi puddle buster raincoat for this school year. As I mentioned earlier, a lunch bag is also a school year staple, and we got our Frugi ones in time for summer starting. Their bold colours make them instantly recognisable which helps the girls spot them too.

My favourite thing about the school holidays is… having the girls at home all summer, visiting family in Devon and family adventures in the bright summer evenings.

My least favourite thing about the school holidays is… it’s sometimes tough juggling deadlines/client work with the little ones in the middle...I generally give out snacks, pop on CBeebies and hide in the bathroom to catch up on emails!

My kids’ favourite thing about the school holidays is… freedom to go and explore, not rushing to get ready in the morning for school.

My kids’ least favourite thing about the school holidays is… not seeing their school friends as much.

I usually feel... emotional when the girls go back to school but after last year’s lockdowns I am very grateful they can go back... I don’t fancy another home learning term, lol!

Once the kids go back to school/nursery… I will miss their company but I’m also looking forward to working on increasing the clients for AC Connects and projects I have on the go. Being a working mum is a juggling act, especially when trying to grow a business, so it’s great to have the peace to be able to concentrate on it!

Here at Frugi we always do our best to help the planet! We’re super proud of our outerwear collection made from 100% recycled post-consumer plastic waste, which is perfect for school! As a family are you eco-conscious? If so, what every day sustainable swaps do you make?

This is something we try to do in our family, and like most people we’re working to be more eco-aware. However, it’s far from perfect! We’re conscious of making small changes to make them habits we can build on and go from there. When purchasing the girls’ clothes, I do so with the intention of them being handed down. I try to buy well-made, good quality clothing and footwear that will last years. We have also been making small changes to reduce the amount of plastic we bring into the house, and buy from eco-conscious brands like Frugi who employ clever ways of manufacturing, designed to repurpose existing plastic waste. Things like taking a coffee from home (try to but still could do better) or using our Frugi insulated food flasks for our picnics. All these little things and efforts add up!

Thanks Anna!
