Frugi Time: Bedtime Stories with Smriti Halls

THE WINTERY SEASONS ARE UPON US!

And we’re super-duper excited to introduce our new Frugi Time series; Bedtime Stories! Where we'll be hosting a range of amazing children's authors who will be reading their favourite books, perfect for helping get your little ones ready for bedtime. So snuggle up and get cosy in your Frugi PJs, before you head to the land of nod!

We hope you'll discover new children's authors and books that inspire, educate and ignite the imagination of your little ones, plus we want to give busy parents the option to have a "night off" from reading bedtime stories. Our series of Bedtime Stories can be watched and enjoyed any time of day (despite the name!), where children can engage with the stories, virtually 'meet' the authors, discover new worlds and feel encouraged to dig out their own books and get reading! You may even have a copy of the books already, so why not encourage them to read-a-long with the author?

For our first Bedtime Story we've been joined by the lovely Smriti Halls, an award-winning, critically acclaimed children's author, reading her book Rain Before Rainbows.

We chat to Smriti Halls, author of Rain Before Rainbows!

Hi, I'm Smriti Halls! I’m South Indian by birth, British by nationality and a Londoner at heart… though I lived all over England and Wales while I was growing up. Life for me is all go. I’m a full-time author and a full-time mum to three wonderful sons. I love the mix and I hope I manage to get the balance right – most of the time, at least! We have a very busy, very loving family life where books, movies, running, music, travel, laughter and THE most fabulous food feature in abundance. I adore being part of a dual heritage Indian-English family and the richness of experience it brings to our lives.

When did you write your first book and what encouraged you to become an author?

I was an editor and writer for children’s publishing and television for many years but had always wanted to write books of my own. While on maternity leave for my middle son, I decided to see where my stories could take me… I wrote two, sent them out and, to my great joy, they were met with much enthusiasm. I continued to balance editorial work with my own writing until, in 2012, I took the plunge and became a full-time author. I have now been published in more than 35 languages and have written many bestselling, award winning books. This year I was Writer in Residence for BookTrust and I'm currently a judge for the Costa Book Awards. Nerve-wracking as it was, I’m very glad I sent those first stories off.

What inspired you to write Rain Before Rainbows?

I wanted to write a book that would balance the light and the dark of our lives and remind us that although difficult days are a part of every human story… so too are love and friendship and joy, so too are light and colour and life. There may be rain… but there are rainbows. It’s something we all need to hear sometimes, whatever age we are.

My favourite things to write about are… anything and everything.

I usually find my inspiration in… those I love.

The best part of writing a book is… the fizzing excitement of finding a great idea and knowing it’s going to take me somewhere exciting.

My favourite thing about books is… the feeling of being known – by someone who doesn’t know me at all!

Reading is important because... it helps me see the world through others’ eyes; it’s endlessly inspiring, empowering, comforting, hilarious, moving, surprising… and makes me feel connected with humanity throughout the ages.

What advice would you give to aspiring young writers? Get writing – don’t just dream about it… do it. Only YOU can tell your stories.

Thanks Smriti!
